Little Man is starting preschool in a few weeks. I was filling out his paperwork tonight and of course had to write his full name several times. It looked so strange to me. He is our foster son, but we don’t think about him like that. He is “our” son in our hearts always and forever! He may have another family’s last name, but he has our hearts!
“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;”
He may have a different name, but he’s certainly a part of your family
Yes, we ran into that a lot with our boys. People at their daycare were always calling me by their last name …
We struggle with that with Strawberry Shortcake. It is made more difficult by the fact that for the past three years she has refused to use her legal last name. She uses our last name on all of her school work and argues with anyone who dares to refer to her by her legal last name. Now that we have had such negative contact with her biological father, I have to be honest…I am not too fond of the name myself! But one thing that we tell her over and over, your last name isn’t your identity, nor does it limit who can love you! And we tell ourselves over and over, she was born in our hearts and regardless of what her legal name is, she will always be our girl.
